ULANA LAU NIU
Ulana Lau Niu honors the ancient practice of weaving coconut leaves, a skill passed down through generations across the vast expanse of Moananuiākea. The niu, revered as the ultimate provider, gave beyond sustenance, offering function and a framework for survival.
Early voyagers from Polynesia carried the niu as a canoe plant, knowing it would root in distant lands and provide all that would be needed for human survival. The leaves of the coconut were transformed into baskets, hats, fans, mats, and thatching. Tools of everyday life, these symbols of ingenuity became testaments of sustainability brought by the niu. In the hands of elders, lau niu carried ʻike, intentionally folded, overlapped, and secured into place.
This pattern takes inspiration from the weaving techniques learned by Manaola as he reminisces of his time spent as a young boy in Kona, watching and learning the Kaloko style of weaving baskets and other objects. It was in these moments that tradition etched into memory that inspired this timeless design.
In Ulana Lau Niu, interlocking lines and waving centerlines embody the motion and distinctive motif of plaited leaves. This imagery evokes the interconnectedness of island nations across the Pacific, united in a shared tradition of honoring, utilizing, and weaving this revered plant.
We invite you to embrace the connection that spans oceans and transcends time with Ulana Lau Niu.
