Breaking through the hardened surface of a volcanic lava flow, the liko unfurls, reaching toward the sky in a quiet yet powerful expression of resilience. The liko (young shoots of ʻōhiʻa) embody rebirth, signaling new beginnings and the promise of what lies ahead. In Hawaiian poetry, liko also symbolizes the rising of a new generation. Just as the ʻōhiʻa endures through the strength of its earliest shoots, our lāhui (nation) flourishes when we cultivate growth, nurturing and uplifting those who come after us.
In honor of his mother, Manaola presents the pattern Kalikoʻokalani, “the budding of the heavens.” The upward stretch of liko reflects an openness to possibility, much like the journeys of discovery that shape our lives. As the buds of the ʻōhiʻa hold the essence of what is to come, they remind us that we, too, are continually blooming into new chapters and new opportunities.
Kalikoʻokalani is a reminder that growth is continuous, that every stage holds its own beauty and purpose. As we nurture the next generation and embrace the paths before us, may we carry the spirit of liko and continue to reach to the highest heights.
