Kaula
In Hawaiian tradition, kaula was among the most valued of human-made objects. From lashing canoes, to securing shelters, gathering food, binding, carrying, healing, and holding, its worth was measured in its dynamic functionality. Kaula was regarded with care and reverence, comparable to wealth itself.
Thus the practice of cordage production became a foundational skill in the Hawaiian community. Fashioned using the hilo style, two sets of fiber are twisted together to reinforce a double ply cord. The tension created by these intertwining connections strengthens the integrity of the cord, allowing it to securely perform its utilitarian functions.
From a poetic space, kaula also speaks to lineage, reminding us that greater strength lies not just in a single cord, but in the connection of many. In this nature, Kaula speaks to lineage, reflecting the passage of knowledge through generations, binding teacher and student, and the shared responsibility of carrying ʻike forward. Like an umbilical cord at the piko, kaula tethers us to source, connecting to people, ancestors, places, and forces both seen and unseen.Woven into itself, Kaula is an artistic expression of unity and a bandwidth of connectivity. It invites the wearer to honor the connections that shape them and to recognize the strength we receive together- across time, space, and generations.
